Media Background Information
“The Silent Crisis”: a comprehensive new book by former police officer
offers simple ways, information and practical advice on
how to protect children against sexual abuse
About the Author
Amanda Robinson is a former police officer who worked in the Child Sexual Abuse Unit in the Northern Territory, where she worked with victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse. When parents asked “how can I keep my child safe”, she realised how little information was available. “The Silent Crisis” is the result of five years research and writing on the subject to produce the most comprehensive and accessible guide to help parents everywhere.
Praise for “The Silent Crisis”
“The Silent Crisis doesn’t only address the vital issue of ‘keeping kids safe from sexual predators’
but also the bottom line priorities of enhancing self-esteem and
engendering a sense of responsibility, appropriate trust and caring connection in our children,”
Dr. Kathy Kezelman, Advocates for Survivors of Child Abuse.
“The book gets to the key to teach children personal safety; which is not so much prescribing action but emphasising life skills such as communication, self-worth, resilience and problem solving. This is an immensely important book for parents of children of all ages”,
Carol Ronken, Bravehearts.
Why “Silent Crisis”?
Robinson believes as many victims never disclose the abuse they have suffered, she deems it the ‘silent crisis’ that must be dealt with if we are to end child sexual abuse.
What are the key things parents can do to protect their children?
Robinson believes the three key things parents can do are to:
- educate children on the dangers, their sexuality and their rights;
- communicate openly and honestly with children; and
- establish a trusting and caring relationship, children need to know they can rely on their parents.
Is ‘stranger danger’ – myth or reality?
Robinson states 90 per cent of sexual abuse cases against children are committed by persons known to the child. She believes it is imperative children understand they cannot determine if someone is dangerous simply by the way they look.
What do to if we suspect someone we love
The book broaches a very sensitive issue for parents - they cannot discount someone they suspect of committing this kind of abuse because they are a trusted family member or close friend.
Protection against child abduction
Robinson provides advice for parents to tell children what techniques could be used by someone that wants to lure them away, and explains what children should do if they are ever approached by an unfamiliar person.
